CHRISTIAN
What do Christians believe?
The Christian Church is grounded in the Old Testament revelation of God as Holy, Just and Gracious. However, the faith of the Church is based on the teaching and life of Jesus Christ, whom Christians believe to be the Incarnate Son of God, the revelation of the Creator God who is addressed as Father. This teaching is set down primarily in the four Gospels, and the writings of the Early Church - the New Testament.
Jesus lived in 1st century Israel and He was crucified on the orders of Pontius Pilate, the Roman Governor of the Land, on charges instigated by the Jewish Authorities. As the Son of God Incarnate He taught that His life and mission encapsulated and inaugurated the Kingdom of God. Christians believe that after His crucifixion in Jerusalem the prison of death could not hold Him and He rose from the dead on the third day; appearing to many hundreds of people over the following forty days. The historical importance of this event is testified to by the fact that the first Christians, who were Jews, changed their day of Worship from the Jewish Sabbath to the day of Resurrection - Sunday, the first day of the week.
Christians believe that every person is made in the image of God and is of inestimable value to God. However, only those who have come to a real, vibrant, faith in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth are able to address God as Father; having come into a new relationship with Him. This salvation event involves a personal response to the offer of forgiveness and new life, the offer that God in Christ has made through the Cross and Resurrection. Two of the most important events in the life of a Christian are Baptism and the celebration of the Last Supper; the Eucharist. These rites are part of Christian obedience to the commandments of Jesus Christ, and the teaching of the Early Church.
Christians believe in the revelation of God as Father, Son and Holy Spirit; One God in three Persons. At Pentecost the Holy Spirit was poured out on all the believers gathered in Jerusalem. The Holy Spirit enabled them to witness fearlessly to the truth revealed in Jesus Christ, assuring them of the real, empowering presence of the Risen Christ. Christians today have access to God through the active and empowering presence of the Holy Spirit and the spiritual gifts and graces that He brings with Him. Many Christians throughout the ages have been challenged to work for social justice and equality, as the Holy Spirit has guided and empowered them.
The Christian Church today is made up of many different denominations who are actively working to achieve unity, often in the local context. This is demonstrated locally as the churches in Chepstow and District work together for the sake of the Gospel of Christ.

RELGIOUS SOCIETY OF FRIENDS (QUAKERS)
The Quaker Movement arose in the mid 17th Century. Its followers called themselves "Friends". They began their radical redefinition of Christian Truth in England, where George Fox was the driving force in the early years. At the centre of the Quaker faith lies the conception of the Inner Light. This principle states that in every human soul there is a certain element of God's own Spirit. This element is known to Friends as "that of God in everyone". Creeds do not form the basis for association in their fellowship. There are Friends whose faith is most sincerely expressed in the traditional language of orthodox Christianity. Other Friends could justly be described as religious humanists. There are no clergy, all members have a responsibility for the life of the Meeting, but most have a Clerk, and others help carry out specific responsibilities. Meeting for Worship takes place regularly at the meeting house or other fixed place. Meetings are held in silence except for Ministry. Quaker Faith and Practice is expressed in the Testimonies of Peace, Equality and Simplicity that lead to Social Responsibility in the world.
